Photography Question

Lauri M. Baker

I don't like how my photo uploaded

Is everyone else really uploading their files at 72 dpi and 500 pixels on the short side? I resized my photo from approximately 6"x9" at 300 dpi down to 500 pixels by 7xx pixels at 72 dpi, and it looks really crappy on the website. Nobody else's images look bad like this, so I know it's not my browser. What could be the problem? And if it's something I can fix, is it possible to replace the entry?

Thanks - Lauri

  Hi Lauri,

I have found that using 150 dpi with a 3x4.5 image works adequately for my pictures - it stays well within the "500 pixels on the short dimension" rule and results in a reasonably small file while keeping the picture fairly crisp...

Try saving your resized image as a TIFF file- maybe you already do, but I have been pleased with the improvement of my web images- I used to upload JPEGS, and while this is a very common format, I found that TIFFs are much sharper- non-lossy compression!

Thanks. I did load it as a TIFF file the first time, and that's the one that looked bad. But I'll try again.

I ftp my files all the time to my lab, and they print great even up to 16x30, so I know it's not an image quality problem. It's just in converting to the required file size for this contest and then uploading.

Funny, this is the only site where my pics look good! I have tried to upload to a few other sites and the requires file size is a lot smaller- even the best images look bad. It is frusterating, I know!:)

  Well,

I got it to look better in the second upload. I saved it as a jpeg first and then resized it. For some reason it looks better than when I resized it as a tiff file. Maybe because a tiff file is bigger and I had to size it down further to meet the requirements? Thanks for suggestions everyone.

Lauri
