Negative Scanners

I want to know if you use a film scanner and what kind of results you get from it. And, what kind.

I am considering getting one. I think, after much thought, the main purpose would be for web use, however, I would also use the digital files for archival purposes. Therefore, there may come a time when I will want a print from those. So, I need quality good enough for a print the size of a 12 x 15 print, or there abouts.

I would have the lab do them, but I'm trying to save money.

Jerry,

The enclosed photo was scanned from a negative, (a fine-grain Kodak film), with a Nikon Coolscan 4000 ED.

I can recommend this scanner highly for 35 mm negatives and slides.

For printing to 12 X 15, you should have no problems if your negative is of good quality.

I suggest you get a dedicated film scanner which are mentioned in the two previous posts. Most of them will allow you to scan negative film and/or transparency film.

I use a Canon CanoScan FS4000US for my transparencies. However, I simply can't afford a Medium Format scanner therefore, I purchased and use an Epson 3200 (flatbed) with film adapters. I use it to scan my MF and Large Format transparencies.

With the Canon, I've won many contests and have been published several times. The scans were from 35mm slides printed at 11x14.

Good luck.
