Photography Question

Equipment

Hi there

I have finally made my first Auto Focus camera purchse, a Canon EOS Elan 7E and I am highly impressed with the camera, although I had a lot of trouble with the online store I bought it from. I bougt the camera with a Canon 28-80mm EF f3.5 lens. Now, I am not sure what to get next. I have an older Pentax manual focus camera with 4 lenses and alot of accessories, but only one lens for this new camera I bought. I have noticed that the Canon lenses I want, are generally really expensive and budget really is very limited (I saved up a year for this camera). I am looking at Sigma, Tamron and Tokina alternatives. Can anybody give me any advice on zoom lenses from these three manufacturers in the 70-200 or 70-300mm zoom range. I know I need at least a 200mm or 300mm high end focal length. I am also considering a 2x teleconverter to go with my new 28-80 zoom. Any advice will do. I want to keep my budget to $150 for a new lens.

There is a reason why the Canon lenses are more expensive. Wait, save up your pennies, and buy one.

  Hello

I just bought a 30e, which is the non-usa market elan 7e. I started with EOS back in 87 with the 620. Great camera. But back then those canon EOS lenses s*cked. I sold the system, got out of photography. Not enough money nor time. I was a wedding photographer side job, pretty goood to. Before I used the 620 in the army taking shots. Well I just started back in the newer EOS lense are much better. I like. But ONLY the lens that are the Internal Focusing ones. Your 28-80 is not one nor is the 70-300. I one one its OK but the 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 is much nicer. Sturder, quicker focus, thes 'play' in the lens. That is true with all the Iinternal focus and L lens.
To sum it up if you spend the money for canon lens get the L or the Internal focusing ones. Otherwise the other brands are just as good. Cheaper.
Speaking of cheaper, I new nothing of Ebay before I bought the 30e. I wish I did I could of saved approx. $100-150. Its a great place to get some lens cheap. It's better for camera bodies. Check it out.

Your budget is unrealistic if you want good glass. Sigma lenses stand out from the other 3rd party lens manufacturers. Try to stay with their EX series as they are aimed at pros. Any doubts on Sigma's quality can be erased by reading Popular Photography' reviews and check this one out while you are at it--http://www.photoshot.com/articles/product_reviews/sigma_28_300mm.htm the 28-300 hyperzoom is awesome and the price will almost fit your budget
