Canon D 60

Hi there,
I am wanting to buy a Canon D 60 and I believe my lens focal length will be increased by 1.6x . Do I lose any f stops on my Tamron 28 - 300 lens?
Are digital SLR camera's better than say my current EOS 300 film camera in low light situations and would the D60 be good for sports action?
Thank you in advance,
Colin.

F-stops stay the same, whether you use the lens on an EOS 35mm film slr, EOS APS slr, or EOS digital slr. The 1.6x conversion factor is to relate the lens's field of view/magnification when used with the smaller digital imaging area. The actual focal length does not change. It is not the same as using a teleconverter with the lens.

The specs for the D60 indicate very slightly better autofocus in low light than the EOS 300. The AF of the D60 is rated down to EV 0.5 (equivalent to 11 sec @ f/4 @ 100 ISO) where the EOS 300 is rated down to EV 1 (equiv. to 8 sec @ f/4). However, the D60 is limited to a maximum ISO setting of 1000, where the EOS 300 will accept films rated 1600 and higher (up to ISO 6400).

For tracking movement, the AF of the D60 has only 3 sensors, v. 7 used in the EOS 300. On the other hand, the D60 is capable of shooting 3 frames per second (up to 8 at one time) while the EOS 300 is limited to 1.5 fps.
