5D Mark III Focusing

I recently upgraded to the 5D Mark III. The focusing system has me very confused. It does a good job on macro but I am having difficulty getting sharp focusing in the foreground with landscapes. If any of my fellow BP photographers know what setting I should be using, please lend me a hand. I am very discouraged. I have been using my 24-105 Canon lens. Even with a tripod the foreground is soft. I don't think I am using the correct setting. In fact, any information about f stops, ISO etc.... would be greatly appreciated. I had no trouble with my Mark II.

Harriet, I'm not sure what's going on. The settings aren't as important as compared to whether your lens is sharp and your focus system is working. I"m assuming you're in auto-focus? Although manual focus should be fine too, especially if you're using Live View with zoom to aid in focus.

I have the 5D-III and no issues, and the 24-105mm lens...same as you. I recommend doing a test with your camera on a tripod. Shoot in F8 or so, as generally this is the "sweet" spot for most lenses. Use Live View and go to manual focus...do a zoom while in live view to ensure you're in sharp focus, then cable release (or 2-second timer). I often use live view to ensure I have sharp focus, especially in manual mode.

Do you have a reputable camera store close by? You could take it there too.

  Ken,

I am going to do some tests when our weather clears up. I will take your advice and use live view and manual focus. I have used it before with my Mark II. I have not had any trouble with the 24-105 but I will test several lenses. Thanks again for the advice.

Hi Harriet, To add a bit to Ken's suggestions, I have that same lens and it has Image stabilization on it. Make sure it is turned off when on the tripod. Also try some shots at f22 to see how deep you can keep everything in focus.

Thanks, Bill, for the reminder. I have tried a few shots with f stops greater than 11 and they are much better. I have also adjusted the focus points so that there are more points in a cluster and this has helped. I am hanging in there. Thanks for the information.
