Photography Question

How important is the printer resolution?

I have a 3Mega pixel camera and want to buy a proper photo quality printer.
If my camera only produces 2000x1500 pixel images, then for a 7x5 print I only need a 300dpi printer. Can anybody explain to me why I would want a 1400dpi (and upwards) printer? What is the printer going to do with the missing information?

If there's any figure a consumer should ignore, it's the dpi figure that printer manufacturers give us. They can jack up that figure all they want; INPUT pixels-per-inch that the printer needs is what you want to use.

These days, an HP or Epson printer capable of photo quality prints needs at least 240 ppi INPUT to give decent results. If you divide the maximum image width for your camera (2000, in pixels) by 240, you'll get the maximum length photo quality print you can expect. HP and Epson make $150 printers that can give you results you won't believe. But don't you believe their output dpi figures; they're meaningless.
