How do you accomplish a solid black background, eliminating everything except your subject.

It all depends on what your shooting. If your shooting a person, put them in front of black velvet or another type of black material (at least 3' away), don't light the background, zoom in and focus only on the subject. That should give you a jet black background. If your shooting products, the same type of setup should work. Practice and try out ideas. If your shooting scenics, well, wait til midnight :o)
I hope this helps you.
Respectfully,
Dan
