Difference Between EP and Staff Favorite Can someone please explain the difference between EP and Staff Favorite and also, if you get an email that your image is a Staff Favorite does it get some sort of icon under it like the EP and others? Thanks.

A Staff Favorite is a new category between EP and Finalist (all Finalists first get EPs and then become Staff Favorites, but not all EPs become Staff Favorites). If your image becomes a Staff Favorite, you'll get an e-mail. Also, the image gets a badge. If this image will get a Finalist badge, then the Staff Favorite badge will be removed.

Beth, here's an example that hopefully puts the contest rounds into perspective. in the December EP thread, Jim Miotke said there were 6 rounds. Assume 10,000 photos submitted to the contest. BP is very transparent in its contest rounds. With the exception of Round 2, we know how we're doing all along their process.

Correct. And if the finalist gets selected as a "gold" then the gold medal replaces silver finalist badge.

After all these years, I finally get it. Now, if I could just figure how they make their decisions. Can you also explain how the POTD gets picked or the photos that are featured in the newsletters or the photo groups that appear in the newsletters?

Beth, POTD and newsletter photos are management decisions. I don't have any insights in this area.

Ken's big picture is very helpful; however, you may also want to know that, except for the Winners or Gold Medal round, his percentages are very rough. I think that's what he's indicating when he says "assume". There have been many finalist rounds that ended up at less than 5% or even 4% of the total entries. 9% is very high, imo. Staff Favorites have only been awarded for a few months; it's much too early for us to have a sense of that. I would guess EP percentages have fluctuated even more widely than Finalist percentages; they certainly have for individual members.

Yes, I agree with Nikki. Seems like last few months finalist rate 9% or so. I think it was 11% several months ago, historical high since I've been on BP. And I think one month it dipped to 3% and you can imagine the forum chatter that month :-)

Also, the POTDs are only chosen from EPs and images with higher medals than EP. I think they are chosen in advance for each date by the BP management. UB.

POTDs seem to be chosen from images with at least an EP. I have never seen a POTD without another accompanying badge: EP, Finalist, 2nd place Winner, 3rd place Winner, or Grand Prize. I personally have a couple of POTDs which did not go past EP so their two badges are EP and POTD.
