Staff Favorite I just received a couple of "Staff Favorite" designations on photos I entered in the monthly contest. Is this something new - something between EP and Finalist?

I got a couple, too. The weird thing is when you look in your gallery, nothing shows them designated as such. I guess it's just a courtesy thing letting you know they liked it. I wonder if it's possible to get a 'finalist' on a picture that wasn't a 'staff favorite'. Guess we'll find out in a few days.

I sounds like this is something new. At least I have never seen this before. My Staff Favorites did show up in my gallery. Maybe yours just hadn't been updated yet, Tammy. Yes, it will be interesting to see if all Finalists are also Staff Favorites.

In the old days before Editor's Picks you'd enter the contest and you wouldn't hear anything unless your photo was selected as a Finalist. You'd never know which of your photos were in the running until the finalists were given out. Then a group of members happened upon a way to find the links to the Judging pools... there were several of them. If I recall they were Runner up, Quarter Finalist, Semi Finalist, Finalist, etc. In order for a photo to make it to the winner's circle it had to move through each of these pools first. Eventually BP discovered that this virtual "ear to the door" eavesdropping was going on and locked the pools. Not long after that though, the Editor's First Picks came into play, and any photo that made it into the Runner Up pool(or whatever the first stage of advancement was called) received a EP badge - going retroactively back years. I suspect this "Staff Favorite" is another Pool (possibly Quarter Finalist) being awarded publicly. Giving us something new to strive for, and another indicator of whether a certain photo is still in the running to be amongst the winners.

Thanks, Muskoka Imagery....that's nice to know. @ Virginia...yeah, I found it odd that it's not a designated thing. The badge only shows up when you view it through the e-mail informing you that you got one. I guess we will see if that takes all the others out of the running. Some of my personal favorites didn't get a 'staff favorite' so I hope they are still in the running! Prob not, though. lol

You can see the badge under your image IN your member center as well... Go to Your Photos where you would enter an image that's been uploaded previously... Click on your image there and you"ll see the badge... At least I do.

Based on the wording of the email, it sounds like "staff favorites" are not necessarily a stage of the contest, just an input to it. As others have said, time (how much time?) will tell.

I got 5 of them and can see them if I click on the link in the email. But if I go look at my "Old style" gallery cannot see them.If I click on an image in my gallery I cannot see them, but if I click on the thumbnail in the discussions, there it is...Maybe they have not worked out the bugs yet. It's nice to get some recognition, but wish they could have mentioned this in the Snapshot I received yesterday, or sent an email explaining what they are ? Thank you Muskoka, I remember when things were like that and while it was hard waiting, I liked it. Then someone emailed me about the codes on how to find out if you were in the running ...like you said, then they came out with the EPs...confusing.It's the first day, so I will just wait and see what happens next I guess :-)

It's possible these are the "semi-finalists"...reference Musoka's comment above. For example, assume 3000 EPs...then they whittle down to 2000, then to 1500 for semi-finalists. It's these images that get "Staff Favorite." And then they whittle this number down to the Finalists...and if the image gets a finalist button, it replaces the STaff Favorite button. But like all of you, we'll know more when they release finalists.

I haven't received any of these... but, maybe they don't look at my photos much, any more (I got only 10 EPs in July... and so far, I've got 2 for August despite entering every day all months)... taking into account how confusing the whole system is nowadays, it's hard to tell if receiving such badges is an honor or a consolation prize.

It could be the same as a Judge's Comment... like when a judge would leave a comment about our photo in our gallery discussion thread. ??? Right now the number of staff favorites is about 300 more than the number of finalists in the past. So it looks like there is still some weeding out to do. Only time will tell. As we all know... who can predict what is going to happen next at BetterPhoto. LOL

Hi All, Staff Favorites is brand-new - so new that it came too late for yesterday's SnapShot :) Here's the scoop: We added another round late in the contest judging process. During this new round, Staff Favorites are chosen. Finalists will be more selective, and are pulled from this new round. Contestants will be notified if their contest entry is selected as a Staff Favorite. Then, if the image is later chosen as a finalist, the photographer will be emailed again. Also, there have been questions about gallery display of the new Staff Faves badges. That should come soon (hopefully) ... meantime, it's being worked on. Good luck, and enjoy the contest!

This new addition is definitely a "Like" from me as it brings more interest to the contest, IMHO. However, "Semi-Finalist" (which it actually is) would have sounded more professional to my ears than the much casual sounding "Staff Favorite" badge, just my 02 cents. UB.

Martha & Tammy, the only thing I can figure out is that your Staff Favorites were replaced with Finalist emblems as my Himalayan Poppy was. I had two Staff Favorites to begin with but one became a Finalist so now it has a new emblem. I have two different emblems. One stayed the same (Flaming Dahlia) a Staff Favorite & the other was upgraded to a Finalist (Himalayan Poppy) So, it lost it's Staff Fav emblem and got a new Finalist emblem. Sharon, the Staff Favorites don't show up in my gallery either. See this link for an example: http://www.betterphoto.com/Premium/Default.phpx?id=121358&iPage=2&mp=V2 The photos "Lonely Highway" and "Washington Colors" were Staff Favorites. I can click on the thumbnail to see the normal-sized photo, along with the Staff Favorite badge. It's just that they don't appear below the thumbnails. They do appear with the Classic layout. Hey Sharon, I think I see what you're referring to. On the new Style Gallery, if you click "My Gallery", it goes to the first photo...versus the actual gallery. I honestly don't know if it's always been like this? Or something that happened recently.... Thanks for taking a look. :-)

I'M BACK. LOL Nope, something different. If I click on your profile picture in this forum it goes to your gallery page. (and the same with Martha and Tammy) Now what I'm trying to explain. For example: When I click on the photos you mentioned with SFs I get a new page with your photo which is the same photo (in which it should be) and it has your SF emblem. Now go back to the first step, click on your profile pic in this forum and now click on the name of the photo printed underneath a photo (other than the first one in your gallery) It is in white print right below the photo. It takes you to the wrong photo... the first photo and today's entry in your gallery. It happens on all the pictures accessed this way. Same in Martha's, Tammy's, Kara's and Muskoka's galleries. This should not happen and only does so when I enter your galleries from the forum page and your profile pic. Let me know if you see what I mean or not. Maybe Kerry will read this. It's not a big deal but it is a glitch. I can't explain it any clearer so don't worry about it as it is no big deal.

OK..I got it...finally! :-) On the new style galleries, the title of the photo is a link. Just as the thumbnail is a link. The thumbnail calls up the photo. But the photo's "Title" link always goes back to the first photo in the gallery. Yes...a glitch. Good job, Detective Sharon!
