Fast lens depth of field

I'm thinking of buying a fast lens, f1.4, for low light stiuations and shallow depth of field. The problem is the focal lengh. I like using the 35mm end of my zoom lens but am unsure how the depth of feild, at f1.4, will be affected with this wide angle. Is the depth of field much greater with a 35mm lens when compaired with a 50mm lens at the same aperture?

  Paul,
You can check DOF and Hyperfocal distance for lens length and f/stop combinations at shuttercity's DOF calculator.

I'm curious. Why are you using the wide angle for narrow depth of field? Generally, for selective focus, you would opt for a longer lens and large aperture (f/4, f/5.6). Wide angles are generally chosen for extensive DOF.

Okay, now I'm confusing myself. I hope I'm not getting this bassackwards. I'm not accustomed to thinking about narrow DOF with my wide angles. What are you hoping to photograph, if you don't mind me asking? This might help others help you choose the best lens for the job.

I understand your low light query, but I'm not sure I understand what lens length you're looking for.

Anyone?
