digital photo lighting in studio for small objects

I use a Nikon Cool Pix 850 to shoot rings and other jewelry items for record keeping and our web site. The color is not saturated and it is hard to tell yellow gold from white etc. Our professionally shot slides are fantastic in color terms and I was wondering if there are any lighting systems-small in a box like set up-that you now of? I have seen a domed one but they are very expensive. I would like to make one but need some guidance on lighting sources. Most of these use some type of flourescent lighting. So what is that all about? Enought questions? Thanks for any info you might have.
Yours,
Thomas Reardon

Check out the books on close-up photography. Ebay has a lot. Look for info on building a light tent. You can use plastic pipe for the frame and some kind of thin cloth. I think you flash through the cloth to even out the light.
