Storage Issues

I'm shooting in Raw and when storing non-converted files on hard drives, I find that I'm winding up with a ton of files in which I can't differentiate from because of no thumbnails. Is there a way to store them without converting and still be able to find the one I want? Thanks.

Dennis, if you don't have Adobe Bridge or Lightroom to actually organize your Raws and see the thumbnails, you can download a free viewer from Faststone. Excellent program.

Dennis, I don't know what camera you've got, but I shoot a Raw with a small JPEG. The Lightroom and Bridge are also great, if you've got CS3 you don't need Lightroom since a lot of the features were built into it.

Thanks so much for your help. I'm shooting a10D which has the embedded JPEG. I'm not familiar with either Adobe Bridge or The Lightroom.

Adobe Bridge and Lightroom are Adobe Photoshop products. CS2 & CS3 are very popular but you should have received a Adobe Elements disc with the 10D.

Microsoft has a power toy, the RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer, for Windows XP. Once installed you can view your raw files just as you can with jpg images providing the ability to view, organize, and print photos captured in RAW image formats from supported Canon and Nikon digital cameras.

BTW - I failed to mention that the RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer is a free download. I use both CS2 and lightroom, but this plug in is very convenient.

Thanks everyone for your help. I finally realized I have Breeze Browser- which I learned about thru Better Photo- which will read all my hard drives.
Thanks again, great response as always!

Among your other answers, your camera software might have the ability, like the Canon Professional for example or Photoshop Elements 4 you can see one or many of your photos at one time. I just found that for my needs and hope you can use this idea.

If you use the above-mentioned Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnail and Viewer (download from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.phpx?FamilyId=D48E808E-B10D-4CE4-A141-5866FD4A3286&displaylang=en), you will always be able to view the raw files in Explorer without having to start another application.
