Studio Lighting

I was wondering where I could go to talk to someone about studio lighting. I'm in a small town and there is nothing here. I need to buy some lights because my lighting set up just doesn't work - too many shadows. I tried flood lights but they are too bright... any sugestions?

Thanks Erin.

Erin, I'm not sure what you mean by talking to someone about studio lighting. If you have any specific questions I'm sure you can ask them here. I can give you my point of view regarding studio lighting.

I use Photogenic Powerlights and really like them. The key things I looked for when finding mine were power, variability, and strong modeling lights. In regards to power I wanted at least 500 w/s. That's sufficient power to use with large softboxes, light up a room, or shoot groups. You can always dial down power on a light but you can't get more if it isn't there. As for variability, some lights only have a range of 2-3 stops. My Powerlights are infinitely variable over 5 stops (as are the modeling lights). This saves you having to change the distance of the lights constantly to get the f-stop you need. My modeling lights are 250 watts. This is plenty of power to see shadows with large softboxes and the like. You can even shoot with them like tungsten lights if you're in the mood.

As far as where to get lights, if you want new check with B&H, Adorama, or Unique Photo. For used stuff keep your eye on Ebay. That's where I got my lights.
