Wedding Photography - Need Some Tips!

My friend has a wedding coming up, and she likes my pictures. I have all the equipment, but I've never shot a wedding. I've watched a photographer at a wedding once and it looks easy. I'm good with people so that shouldn't be a problem. I've spent countless hours in the library and bookstore, reading and looking at photos. Is there anything that I should know that I can't find in a book? Thank you much.

Hi Brenda... If you get any other responses to your post today, I suspect you will hear almost unanimously that you are headed for potentially disastrous trouble with your friend... I'd say politely decline, and try to get work assisting an established wedding photographer in "real-time" before taking on the assignment of a friend's wedding. Good luck!

Too late, it's in 3 weeks. I will be shooting in 3's +2 ..0 .. -2 so I'll get the details one way or another. And with flash being so good these days, I'll just shoot that in program( they almost always come out). Plus, I will be shooting with 2 cameras for insurance. I will be bring purfume ads with me for romantic poses and the rest will be just as it happens.

I have to say, your question and response almost has the air of a "setup" to it... good luck, and be sure to share the outcome here and in your gallery.

  Brenda,
Congratulations on your event. You're doing this for a friend who is well aware of your experiance and I believe (and you'll see that from all my posts) that is a great place to start. Here is what I suggest:
- Still have a contract. I have I contract that includes "Photography is an artistic media, and as such, you may not see the value in every shot taken..." However, we do guarantee to get every pose on the suggested pose list that has been provided. (There is a thread on contracts where I have posted all of this.)
- Have a posing list or two. We have three - a small one we present, a long one we shoot from (in addition to candid and photojournalistic) and one for the DJ. Present it at least 2 weeks before, and invite them to add anything else (people or places) they may want to see in the way of poses.
- Talk to them and, hopefully, the officiator, and visit the venue for test shots.
- Discuss the time they would like to do the posed shots and then take control of that time.
- Ask another family member or friend to help gather the family or party members for the larger shots.
Well, here are some suggestions for you. I wish you the best of luck in this venture.

You have all this in mind already, good job.
then most likely you already know where you can fall as well.
And that is not really a place we can help you.
We can help you with info and a positive expression, but I think most of us have had to learn the pit falls the hard way,And making those mistakes is where you REALLY LEARN them.
so agian best of luck in your event.

  Brenda,

Look for a recent thread called "List of wedding shots" or something like that. Great checklist of shots you "have to get."

Good luck!

All great advises. I would also be aware of mirrors and if wedding is in the evening, reflections in windows.
Last wedding we attended, my son's, the professional photographer posed everyone in front of a mirror wall. The reflections were distracting and took away from the photos. Wedding was in the evening and he took pictures of the couple cutting the cake straight in front of the window, same thing, bad reflections. Thankfully we took pictures ourselves! Might also be a good idea to find out exactly what the couple is planning... throwing bouquet, garter etc so that you can be prepared and make yourself a "picture list". Ask if "Aunt Edna" is visiting so that you can be sure to include all the people that are important to the couple.

Good luck and have fun!!!

"watched a photographer at a wedding once and it looks easy."

I'm thinking so hard about the 'be nice' thread, and trying to stick to the spirit of it.

I wouldn't give anyone one iota of advice with a rude and completely disgracing comment like that.

Best of luck in your "P" mode.

  Hi Brenda
Watching a photographer & doing it are two different things. He or she made it look easy because they know what their doing & have a routine that works for them. I'm not trying to discourage you but all the reading you've done does not account for actually doing it. You have the advantage that your friend knows this & still wants you to photograph her wedding but don't go into this unprepared, her wedding memories are in your hands. You've read & bought the equipment but have you experimented with it. Go to the church & hall the wedding will be in, do some test shots, explain to them the situation your in.. most people are very easy to deal with. Have you actually posed any large groups yet , if not .. get your friends together & pratice posing them. Make a list of the formal shots that you want to do.. think about how your going to pose each group ( small or large ) what props are there for you to use. All this will help make for beautiful pictures and you'll go into it more confident and do a great job as a wedding photographer. I guess most people think wedding photography is easy but to the photographer that wants only the best for thier clients , planning , time & patience is a must. My advice for you is be prepared & pratice, practice. Follow your dream... you'll do great..All the best.

Hi Carol. I mean easy in the way she handled the people. I got my histogram landing where I want it most of the time, and if its off I shoot it again. My friends are patient, they'll understand. I practice every day even if its at my dinner table shooting my meal that my sweeite prepard for me. Funny, I caught him the other day watching my PS2 DVD. He doesn't know I know, but maybe he wants to help me down the line.

  Hi Brenda
Won't that be nice, my husband & I both enjoy photography and shoot the weddings together. We've met many wonderful people along the line, but when we were starting out we've had to pay our due's and start from the bottom. I had the pleasure of working under a very good photographer for a year...he taught me that in this business, people trust us with their precious memories... we don't have a second chance , we have to know what were doing & get it right the first time.
Best of luck Brenda, I hope everything goes good for you & your friends.

well brenda, carol's website can't be found.my guess is?
i myself enjoy a good game.i still haven't got a rulebook but will try to play the best I can as long as it's fair and it's an even playing field.
the smoke and mirrors are a little tricky to pick up on,yet the little things are mostly habit or personality.
geeeez, what is wrong with this forum is that they let me on here.

Kerry the only thing I will share with you is my recent experience at my sister's wedding in Maui. She paid for a professional and then I just "tagged along" as far as taking shots. When each of us were done and had sent her our photo's - she really liked mine the most because I captured so many close moments between the two of them that were not staged. Lots of shots where they were just whispering in each other's ears, catching a quick kiss or gazing into each other's eyes. I just snuck up on them alot! LOL. So she liked the fact they were not looking into my camera - rather at each other. I would never do a wedding on my own but it was fun to get some experience. If you want some samples just email me and I'll send you some. Good luck!

The type of pictures you took are the best kind to get. I try to get the same thing when I can. They are a lot more personal that the standard wedding fare. Why don't you post a few examples in your gallery as I am sure we would all like to take a look at them.

ok, taking your advice - I will be tagging along with a pro this weekend. She told me that she'll pay me $5 for every photo that she can use. I hope I get at least 40 so I can get get 2 more gigs.

Hey Brenda, I was in my Brothers wedding and coordinated it extensively.
The Brides family hired a "pro" photographer. My shots of the wedding were 20 times nicer. Atleast 50 of my picture are included in the wedding album in place of hers. And I'm totally an aspiring photographer! Take lots of pictures of the sentimental moments. Dad taking his "little girl's" hand etc. Whatever you can imagine to be a tender moment, you put yourself in that moment to capture a picture and they will fall in love with your shots. Oh... everyones favorite shot that I took was of my brother dipping his bride and kissing her while she has the bouquet in her hand. It's so romantic! send me your e-mail and I'll send you the picture. Awesomes sugestions given by everyone. Number 1 sugestion is make a list of your poses and go over them with your friend. Another sugestion is to do it for free so that way she CAN'T complain!

well I did my tag along. That was a long day(14hrs with travel included).
I shot about 400 shots. The hardest part was that alot of the guest with their P&S cameras kept walking in front of me. There had to be 20 of them trying to get a shot, like it was a sporting event. No one got in the way of the pro though(not with her bazooka lens: 70-300). The food was great and I had a great time. My back and neck were a little sore, but for a once a week thing I don't think its a bad job at all. Now I'll have to sit at the computer for a full day to edit.
The photographer I worked for says she spends about 1 week on each wedding.
She also told me it took about 7yrs to get where she is now. You have to be a good business person to get the work(no matter how your photos look). She is a 6digit a year biz and spends anywhere from $35,000-$50,000 on advertising. I almost choked on that one. I told her that for fifty grand(more than I make a year) that I would go door to door(she couldn't stop laughing).

OK, sure. As my dear old Dad used to say, (while sticking out one leg) "Pull this one, too, so I won't limp."
