I'm not a Nikon guy (or a macro guy for that matter) but ring flashes are great for macro work. I know Canon makes dedicated ring flashes and would assume Nikon does the same.

I'm not a Nikon guy either but have done some macros, albeit outdoor without flash.

There are several methods for macro flash work and Jeff's suggestion of a "ring light" or "ring flash" is the best solution, especially for very close work with high magnification. The easiest methods to implement make use of dedicated TTL flash control.

Nikon makes a couple of ring flashes:
SB-21A (for the Nikon F3 only)
SB-29

These are not inexpensive flash units. Some much less expensive aftermarket ones are also made for Nikon:

Vivitar 6000AF (for Nikon AF)
Sunpak DX-8R (requires module for Nikon)
Sunpak DX-12R (requires module for Nikon)
