Photography Question

Kris Haskins

What do you think?

I just found this site recently and thought that I might try and join in. I have found that having people criticize my images makes me more eager to go out and make more. How should I go about getting involved?

  Kris!

Welcome aboard! Please do join us, the more the merrier (And the more learning we all do!)

When I first joined this place, I was a beginner photographer. Through many failures, constructive feedback and a much patience on my part and the other photographers here, I've become a much better photographer. I've still much to learn, but if you compare my original photos to my photos these days, anyone would say I've changed from a happy snapper to competent artist. I no longer take photos, I express and capture feelings - my own and others now.

If you want to get involved, there are two ways, one is more work, but will be ultimately more rewarding, but another easier way. The first way is to scan in your photos that you feel you like but don't know why, and also scan in photos that you feel have potential, but didn't quite pull it off. Most of us will tell you here why we think they are good or bad and you can work off that.

The other method requires a bit more skill in critiquing your own photos, then coming here and asking anyone if they have a way to make them better - this is the only way to do it if you don't have a scanner to show us the photos.

Finally, keep in mind that (at least to me) photography is an emotional art. If you're a professional, you're there to capture that emotion for someone else (EG, the happiness and atmosphere of a wedding). But if it is for yourself... well let's just say that a photo that evokes great emotion in me doesn't need to be perfect technically - and critique, even if constructive and fair, means nothing to me because I know the photo is understood by me alone.
