Photography Question

Fawn S.

Why?

Sorry if this steps on anyones toes, but, I was just wondering why, in the Contest Fililists, there was more then one photo by the same person and a lot of the poeple who win or are finilists have web-sits, or member galleries or even have something to do with the Photo Chorses. Why don't you review and consider some of the amatures? Don't they have the right or deserve to win or at least be a finilist too? It just doesn't seem fair to me.

Fawn - I think if you look closely that even though there are a lot of more advanced and professionals who won, there are also many who don't even have a member gallery. I don't believe it has to do with who has galleries, web-sites or have taken courses.
If you look carefully, 2 out of the 5 top don't have galleries or web-sites, and 16 out of 50 2nd placers don't.
I think the bottom line is that the professionals have been doing it for much longer and are better at it. I find it very challenging and rewarding to be able to enter a contest with them, but understand when I don't win. But seeing their pictures every day in the contest gives me ideas and inspires me.
Just my 2 cents...

I imagine that many of the winners who have Galleries or D. Web Sites, won them from previous wins in this contest.

I also agree that many of the repeated winners are really great photographers with a number of exceptional images.

  Fawn,
I am an amateur and was selected as a finalist for the month of April 2004. I have not taken a class here (although I have taken classes at a local community college), nor do I have a member or deluxe web site (since I manage a team of senior web professionals - I know a little about the web and have my own site).
I try not to look at the names of people who win, but look at the images they produce - of course - MY images are JUST AS GOOD as theirs (well at least some times...) All kidding aside, just keep working at it, watch others and their photos and try to learn what you can.
I'll be looking for you in the "winners circle" right there along with me... 8-)

Regards,
John

I stumbled across this website completely by accident this past January or so. I am a complete amateur who has never had a photography class in her life. I made the finals and was thrilled. I have squeaked in each month since I have been posting images. I agree with the others that the ratio of pros to amateurs (I never really paid it any attention) may seem weighted to you because those people have been doing this for years - some decades and are really good at their craft.
I too, fell extra-privileged to have my work make the finals with so many talented individuals...both pros and amateurs.
I also just try to post images that I like for one reason or another - whether it is something new I was trying and wanted feedback on, or something I worked really hard on and wanted to share, or sometimes an image I post just for fun. I try not to post images just with the contest in mind. That's what makes it fun...no pressure, not a competitive sport, just a bunch of photographers from all different levels and backgrounds sharing what they love to do! For me, the contest is there to push me to try new things, strive to do better on the first shot, and open my mind and eyes to new things. When I make the finals, it's saying it worked:-)

I also started from nothing and got my member gallery from a lucky shot early on. From there I watched everyone else and learned what my limited abilities would retain. Finally scraped together enough money for a website, which I may or may not continue after the first year. I know everyone has a chance, since I was brand new and totally awful when I got my first finalist.
