Art Photography Major

I will begin my art photography major next fall but I am going to Europe this summer [click here for great travel guides on Europe] and would like to get started with some black and white... I haven'treceived the requirements yet but I am sure I need all manual.

Most instructors rightly demand all manual cameras but that doesn't necessarily mean you cannot get an automatic camera. It just has to be able to override the auto functions so that you can control things like focus, shutter speed and aperture all by yourself, if need be.

I might avoid fully automatic cameras like the Canon Rebel or most point and shoot cameras, since they don't allow manual override, but perhaps look into a 35mm SLR like the Elan.

[Correction]
Canon Rebel does allow manual override! I owned a Rebel S for a few years before upgrading to an Canon Elan IIE and did some very creative work with it. If people ask me what's a good SLR to start with I still recommend the Rebel!

Yes, part of the multiple personalities here :) Funny that you found this old thread. Don't click the links, though... they are one of the million things that need to be cleaned up in the database. We keep moving forward so fast we never have time to fully clean up these ancient threads.

Have fun!
