After seeing the digital enhancements of Jeff K, I was inspired to try my program. This is one of the effects that I found very facinating. It is called liquify. My model loved the effect.

This is a really cool effect, Donna!!! It looks like she is standing against the background, but her hair appears as if it is being swept into it. How did you do that? She's a very striking model and your image is very striking as well!!! Fabulous job, Donna! Betsy

Thank you Betsy. This effect is the first program in the filters of photoshop elements and it was very easy to do. I just hand twirled the background away from the model.

Hi Rick, This photo was worked on elements. I don't have it now but I believe that this was in the filters section. I don't think that 6+7 have this option in it. At least I havn't seen it. I'll check and see if 6 has it in the filters section too. I don't have 7 any more either.

What type of camera do you shoot with? PhotoShop is the mor expensive one of them all is't it? I think I was thinking of PrintShop. I like Microsofts Picture it Publishing platinum addition. And whats up with that comment by Vasco on 3/2/02?

Yes, Vasko--are you saying you don't like digital effects? Donna, this is nice work, but I don't see the rationale behind the effect here--other than, of course, because the model liked it, which is a good enough reason for me! Sometimes obvious digital effects can do more hurt than good though, and your mention of the subject--not your shot specifically--brought it to mind. But, since we're on your picture here, I don't think this effect does much for the mood of the shot. Of course, I haven't seen the original, so I don't know what you were attempting to improve or change. I like your straight shots better.

HI Rick, I don't know what that comment of Vasco's was about and don't care to know. Regarding photshop, yes, it is very expensive but my system isn't compatable with that picture it program. THe photoshop 6 doesn't have that filter anyway. I shoot with a canon elan 7e. It is a film based camera. Thanks for the comment and try using what you have. It has a lot to offer. If you decide to get a photoshop, try getting the elements first then upgrade. Elements is easier to use and has the more interesting filters like the one used here. Elements comes with some scanners in the package. That's how I got it. Good luck and enjoy!

Piper, This was an effect that she wanted me to do. We played around on the Pc after scanning it and she found this filter and had to have it surrounding her.She's a teen and loved the "TRIPPED OUT" 60's look.. Remember the high school days??LOL. I TOTALLY agree with you about digital effects. This is an old post anyway. I have only posted a few in the last couple of years with anything digitally altered. I like pure photography myself but if my models request something strange, I'll give it a shot. Why not? Thanks for the comment. It's nice hearing from you! Your work is outstanding now.

Rick, Donna is just being modest. The Elan 7e is a great camera--35mm or not. I hear you about MF, though, Donna. That's my next goal for moving up and on. Been drooling over the Pentax 67 for a while now. Maybe next year! Don't tell my husband I said that....

I was thinking about getting a D60 digital but I think a med.format camera may be the wiser choice for me now. I am calling him right now. Watch out!! I won't tell if you don't!

Nice treatment. I love the way the swirls accentuate the flow of the models hair. I wonder how it would like with the background darkened a bit. The liquid swirl is a dramatic effect but its brightness seems to overwhelm the focal point of the picture which is the lovely girl.

You must've had a great fiscal year, Donna! My SIL bought herself the D60 (or maybe it was the D30--can't remember now) but it blew me away that she opted for the high-end SLR as opposed to one of the coolpix cams. She is barely a beginner and doesn't know a megapixel from her .... well, you know what I mean. Burns me up to see people throwing their money away on something they will either get frustrated with and let sit on a shelf or use on total automatic without ever challenging themselves with what this camera can do for them. Or maybe I'm just mad that I didn't get a D60 for Christmas! LOL Can't wait to see the pix you make with your new camera. Have fun with your new learning curve for the year! Ha. p

OH Gosh...not you too, Jeff! I feel like I'm being left behind in the film world! Since I started shooting for SuperStock, the digital/film dilemma has been haunting me again. Scanning 213 slides for digital submissions is not my idea of a fun Friday night, but on the flip side, neither is shucking out $3,000 (and a new and improved brain to go with it) my idea of a fun New Year (we're talking serious learning curve here for the high-end digital SLRs) I played with my SIL's camera and realized I would basically be starting from scratch again if I made the switch to digital. I mean white balance, raw files, etc. Gives me a major migraine just thinking about it all! I have to make a decision some time soon though. I either have to upgrade to a Nikon 4000 scanner (I am using a 2900 right now) so that I can send SS cd's instead of my original slides or make the jump to full-fledged digital and quit having to worry about my slides being "misplaced" or lost in the shuffle of things at my agency. One thing is for certain, I can't afford to make the decision right now either way, so I will just have to continue with my fun-filled Friday night scanning party... p

Hi again Piper, I can't imagine why your SIL would have bought that camera. She must have money to burn!!. .. By the time she learns how to shoot properly the camera will be in dead and she'll need another three grand to buy another one. MY Epson scanner just stopped functioning two minuites ago.!! It's a 2450..I've had it with the thing!!Do you know where I can get support ? This is the first problem that I ever had like this. .I can't remember the last time that I posted a picture and I'm desperate. I'm a little bit freaked out by what you said about the D60. Do you think that it's that it will be that difficult to learn? I had the impression that it was a regular SLR that just happend to be digital.

I ordered it from one place and they promised delivery this week and the camera ended up being unavailable so, I cancelled that order and ordered another one. Now I have to go to NYC on Sunday and pick up it up. I will definatly let you know how I like it! Piper, It took a long time to finally decide on this camera and a long time to save for it too. It IS expensive! I hope that it is as good as they say.

Hey Donna. No, I don't think the D60 in particular will be difficult to learn--not for you anyway. I was talking more about people like my SIL who still shoot on automatic w/ their Rebel G's! As for the digital learning curve, yes, I think that--for me, anyway--having to relearn everything I know again in digital format seems like a daunting task. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but I personally feel that I came a long way in a short time with film because I pushed myself to learn and practice until my film camera was merely an extension of my hand. I don't have to think about what setting to use or what button to push when I want to make a certain image, and I haven't forgotten how hard I studied on my own to get this far. I just feel like going digital right now would not simply be changing over for me, but would be 'starting anew' with the above concept. There is nothing like being able to see your images straight away, of course. Digital does offer many solutions where film falls short. But, there is also nothing more exciting to me (still--after all this time) than seeing a great shot that I worked hard to get right on film illuminated by my lightbox for the first time. I know you can relate. I'm just not ready to give up film altogether, and I know if I bought a digi-SLR right now, my film camera would never see the light of day again. And, to me, this would be a crying shame. I don't think you'll have trouble learning the new camera at all. It is just that it's new & different, and new & different means time and energy spent just to get back to that comfort zone. If you have the time, then I know you will get there quickly and without too much frustration. LOL I'm not familiar with Epson's scanners. I use a Canon flatbed and a Minolta slide scanner. I'm sure someone else here can help though. Good luck!

Thanks for the compliments, and I am excited about Provence, but I might not be going if I can't find a cheaper fare than what is out there right now. Seems Bryan picked the most expensive time of year for us to fly anywhere in France. Paul is supposed to run in the Paris marathon in April, so we have to make a command decision pretty soon. Don't think we have enough FF miles to do both trips in one year. I hear you about someday. I'm sure I will go digital--I think we'll all be forced to if we want to compete in the stock biz. It's just too easy to sit and stew about it right now. Ha. Best of luck to you and your Canon. I will tell you one more thing that keeps me from moving to digital completely. Last month I shot for the local marathon here in Dallas and a lot of the other shooters were using D60's and the like. Two of them went kapooie before the race even began--something with the CCD chips or whatnot. They lost every shot on their cards. They were lucky since they also had their film cameras along for backup, but I was secretly smiling on the inside since I was one of the only shooters there to get shots before the race. Will I ever feel confident enough in a digital camera to leave my film camera behind on an assignment? I don't know, and I certainly don't like the idea of carrying two entire systems around everywhere I go --not without a trusty assistant anyway! LOL There. No more horror stories to freak you out...I promise.

I hope that you can find a cheaper airfair to go on the workshop!. It will be so much fun for you and you'll love Brian.. He is is such an awsome person!! Regarding the camera,I never go on assignment without back up and I'll always have the film camera with me on assignment. It was my first love. Good luck with your stock career. Welcome to the D60 club, of which I am a proud and much poorer member, you will really enjoy this camera. As you may remember I am a nature person and the tele-action possibilities (see upload)of this camera are marvelous. I am now drooling over a Tokina 300/2.8 with a Kenko doubler so that I can really get out there (effective 900mm). Piper is in this class with me and I am very much looling forward to seeing and learning from her wonderful work. Hope to see you soon in some workshop, somewhere. Jacob
