The Digital Darkroom - Free Monthly Newsletter for Digital Photographers

Welcome to the 79th issue of the Digital Darkroom

Hi {FirstName} {OPENEDEMAILMARKER}

What a thrilling program we have planned for the next BetterPhoto Summit! Learn to make storytelling photos, compose with excellence, work with any light, confidently photograph people, and so much more. But you must act quickly, since the New York City Summit is just a week and a half away.

At the same time, we are also looking forward to our next online course session, with a terrific lineup of 4-week courses.

In this issue of Digital Darkroom, don't miss "Raw vs. JPEG" by Rob Sheppard, "Get Creative with Photoshop Plug-ins" by Deborah Sandidge, and a fine collection of photo discussions.

Digital Before and After

Autumn Gold

Putting this in DD because I changed so much. I loved the light in the original and the vertical composition but I had missed the tip of one of the main leaves and the colors were flat so . . . added canvas, cloned in tip and background, cleaned spots on leaves, played with filters to bring out details, added a color layer and blended, and I don't know what else.

Each month, the best Before and After will be featured in the Digital Darkroom.

To participate, upload a Before (original) picture then start a discussion on it (using the Discuss This Photo link under the picture). After telling us how you did created the effect, select "1" or "2" from the Upload Image pull-down menu, and submit an optional intermediate image and a final (After) photo. Aim to educate and inspire by sharing a concise, detailed explanation of your technique. Enjoy!

Very cool..light is awesome. Where was this? Is that you?
- Kathy Coombs

Response 1:Yes, it is me. I placed my camera on the tripod and had it fire off five shots of me at verious exposures so I could do this in HDR. I couldn't move for a long time because the last two were at about 10 and 15 seconds each. I took this at the Philadelphia Eastern State Prison. Thanks for commenting on this picture and the Bamberg picture.

Response 2:I really want to learn HDR. This image is timeless. The light really is amazing..
- Kathy Coombs

Response 3:HDR isn't so tough. Just put your camera on the bracketing feature and shoot of three images of 1 stop each. If you have Photoshop, it will do HDR. Or you can try Photomatix as I feel that is the best program. HDR is tough in one aspect: I either love the image or I hate it. No middle ground on it. So have fun.

How did you get the colors of the rainbow to show up so dark? Great photo! I would love to take a shot like yours. I really excited about taking your class, and improving my creativity.

Response 1:Hi Julia,
This is a composite photo in which I put the rainbow behind the mosque. However, the rainbow was taken from my driveway in Tennessee, and it was the most intense rainbow I've ever seen. I couldn't believe it. I did not tweak the rainbow itself - it was really like that!
It's a pleasure to have you in my course. I hope you find it valuable.
