Featured Article: When Enough Depth of Field Isn't Possible - by Jim Zuckerman
"Too often the laws of optics conspire against us photographers, and to get what we want artistically we have to outsmart these annoying limitations," writes BP instructor Jim Zuckerman in a blog from his Pro BetterPholio (www.corporatefineart.com). For capturing a beautiful leopard in Kenya, he shot two separate images - each with a different focusing point - and then combined them in Photoshop to get the perfect Depth of Field. The result, he says, "looks like what I saw with my eyes"! Learn how Jim Z did it...

| Each month, the best Before and After will be featured in the Digital Darkroom. To participate, upload a Before (original) picture then start a discussion on it (using the Discuss This Photo link under the picture). After telling us how you did created the effect, select "1" or "2" from the Upload Image pull-down menu, and submit an optional intermediate image and a final (After) photo. Aim to educate and inspire by sharing a concise, detailed explanation of your technique. Enjoy! |

New Photo Discussions
New Photo Discussion 1: Along the Canal
- Michelle Alton See Michelle's Basic BetterPholio™ Response 1:Thanks, Michelle! Here's what I did for the frame after copying the image to a new layer: (1) made the canvas 1" wider all around; (2) made a new layer under the copy, filling the background with white; (3) with copy (top) layer active, pressed Ctrl/Thumbnail to load it as a selection, then pressed Add Layer Mask icon and clicked on the new mask; (3) from Filter menu: Distort/Displace, and I used 20/20 for values - then OK, then in the dialog box chose Frosted Glass from my Program Files\Adobe\ Adobe PhotoshopCS3\Presets\ Textures files. Ta-da. Sorry you asked? :)
New Photo Discussion 2: Flightscape
- Sheryl Salisbury See Sheryl's Basic BetterPholio™ Response 1:Great capture and lighting. - Teresa Brooks Visit tessbrooksphotography.com - Teresa's Deluxe BetterPholio™ Response 2:Thanks for your comments. There was a lot of processing involved with this one. I used Photomatix and Adobe Camera RAW to create an HDR image from multiple exposures of a single frame. This allowed me to brighten and bring out detail in the birds without washing out the sunset colors. This process resulted in quite a lot of noise, which was addressed with ACR and Photoshop. - Bill Miller See Bill's Basic BetterPholio™ Read this discussion online Respond to this discussion
