Digital Darkroom: Issue #2 View archives

Hi there,

Here are a few of the best photo discussions from the past month that were either shot with a digital camera or manipulated with digital software.

In addition to sharing these wonderful images and digital discussions, I wanted to ask you what feature or features you would really like to see at BetterPhoto.

I myself would like to see The Camera have more of a presence at BetterPhoto - in other words, each time you upload a photo, you would specify which camera you used to shoot the image. Then I would like to develop a search engine, add a Buy This Print feature for those interested, fix a few bugs... the list goes on and on.

What would you like to see?

Thanks,
Jim Miotke

Hi Nathan,
That's a very interesting portrait with just half the person's face (I've seen it done before but I like it nontheless). But my question is did you digitally alter this pic (colours, levels, etc) before submitting it?
- Romen V.

Response 1:Hi - thanks for your comment. I did do a bit with the color, cropping, and contrast, but it is a straight shot. I use photoshop 7 like a dark room. Her eyes are that color -I picked her becuse of it.
- Nathan C.

Response 2:Nathan, this is a very interesting portrait. There is something quite appealing about it. Even though it is half a face, her expression says so much.

Hi Judy,
Not sure about your title but I'll comment on the pic and say it's nicely lit and I like her pose. Do you have a shot of her in this pose but her eyes looking at the camera? I think that would look quite good too.
- Romen V.

Response 1:Hi Romen, the entire thing is a mistake. I chose the wrong file while uploading the photo. Anyway, the title and the photo don't belong together.

As to the lighting of this one - you are not going to believe it - it was taken at a coffee shop, so there was the general light from the ceiling (bad fluorescent) plus one single candle that was on the table, and it's not in the frame.

What a wistful expression! This is a charming shot. The skin tones are excellent and the colours are bright and appealing. The one little suggestion I would make is that you crop down just a little bit from the top to eliminate the narrow yellow section section there. I find it pulls my eyes up there and away from the little boy's face. (You could probably clone the yellow out, if you prefer not to crop the top.)

Response 1:I love this shot! I would leave it as it is because the center of the umbrella helps define the object better. Also the black dot above the head pulls the eyes back to the head. I think it was a great capture and the motion is awesome!

This photo is so beautiful! It is so cheerful and conveys such hope and renewal... and screams of life! The colors are very nice and the background really sets off the flowers!

How surreal Eddie. Reminds me of a DALI! This babe pulled me right in. Very facinating and beautiful.... How'd ya do it and was this traditional or digital equipment?

Response 1:Hey thanks, Donna. It is digital. I took the shot and then made cutouts of the fountain and other colored areas. I converted the original to greyscale and pasted the cutout back into their places. I like the effect too. Dali? Well, I did see a llama....

I like the "dreamy" quality of the photo. The colors are good, too.
- Pat B.

Response 1:Yes, it really looks neat. Makes you want to take a walk in the woods.

Response 2:Hi Donna,
I like this shot. The way you have composed the green leaves to frame the fog in the back drop. I would love to see how this looks in B&W.
- RAY C.

Response 3:Thanks all! It is always so nice to have comments on my work. Ray, I converted this into B+W and didn't care for it that much. If I get a chance, I will put the converted picture under the color version so you can see the difference.

Hi Ray, I took the JPEG and converted it. Converting or altering a JPEG compresses it somewhat. This should give you an idea of the tones of the picture anyway.

Response 2:Reminds me of the Movie A.I.

This manipulation was done really well.

I take it that you layered a photo of a river on top of the city street shot. Then erased what you wanted exposed?

Well done.

Rhonda,

I love this picture. I love just looking at the moon and have wanted to get a picture of it but have yet to buy a telescope and the adapters to fit my camera. Wonderful picture. Keep up the good work.

Response 1:Mike, thank you so much for your comments. I am really glad that you like it. I know just what you mean. I kept wanting to get a good photo of the moon and it would just come out like a blob. I am really happy with the set up that I have - it works really well.
Thanks again.

New Photo Discussion 10: Springtime Palette

Nikon D1X, 80-200mm L, used buzz for effect.

© Heather McFarland

Hi Heather, great colours & composition. Like that Nikon D1x, but too expensive here in New Zealand...$16,000 NZD! Looking forward to trying out the new Nikon D100.

Cheers, Mike.
- Mike H.

Response 1:Love this effect, Heather! But what is "buzz"? Is that a Corel Paint feature? Never heard of it! At any rate, wish I had the feature... it beautifully enhanced your image!
- Dolores N.

Response 2:Thank you Dolores and Mike.

Mike - yup, it was an expensive camera and a big decision... but the best one I ever made. I have already come close to making up for the cost of the body in the elimination of film and developing costs in just a few months use. Plus I got to sell my film scanner! I don't miss that at all... lol.

Dolores - This is a Photoshop plug-in filter called Buzzpro, by Segmentix. Its main purpose is to intelligently reduce detail, giving images a painterly effect. There are other effects it also does. Here is a link to a good article on it. You will also find a link on that page to try the free trial-period download, or purchase the product.
