Course Outline

Lesson 1: The Quantity of Light
This lesson emphasizes awareness of the quantity of light that a photographer has to work with. You will learn the benefits of multi-pattern, center-weighted and spot metering and how to use features such as exposure compensation to ensure a well-exposed image. You will also learn how to use exposure information to improve the sharpness of your photographs.
Assignment #1: Photograph a subject in open shade, e.g. such as alongside the wall of a house. Choose a simple clean background and pose your subject there. You should be using a moderate focal length range of between 50-70mm. Set your ISO to 200 and with your camera in aperture priority mode, set your lens to the widest aperture. Write down the shutter speed you are using. Close down the aperture to the next full stop, note your shutter speed and make an image. Do this for each full stop aperture. Download your images and evaluate their comparative sharpness.

Lesson 2: The Quality of Light
This lesson explains how the camera evaluates and measures light using its 3 metering modes. You will understand which metering system will handle 90 percent of your shooting situations and when you might want to use the other two alternatives.
Assignment #2: Photograph a single subject under two different types of lighting. First, choose a scene where there is a strong highlight and shadow, making sure to expose for the highlights. Be aware of where the shadows are falling on the subject and the background. For the second shot, place the subject in open shade, again paying careful attention to where the shadows fall.

Lesson 3: The Qolor of Light
Learn how white balance impacts the color of your photographs and how to ensure that your camera delivers the most accurate color possible. Learn the techniques getting great color in the camera, resulting in less time "fixing" images in Photoshop. Discover the qualities of different light sources and how they impact your photographs.
Assignment #3: Set your camera for ISO and white balance after making an assessment of the light outside. Set your camera for aperture priority and set the aperture for f/5.6. Now, go out for 30 minutes (no more) and shoot under that quality and only that quality of light.

Lesson 4: Pursuing the Light
Learn from example as the instructor demonstrates how he sees light and how it leads him to make his photographs. See how he personally uses the techniques and approaches discussed in the class to create memorable and impactful images.
Assignment #4: Submit new images that you have made that are unlike the typical kind of image that you would have made before this course. Simply, I want you to share a pair of images the reveal your new awareness of light.
