Week 1: Shooting Landscapes, and Using the Organizer to Manage Your Nature Photos
The nature photography part of the lesson offers tips and best practices in shooting nature and landscape photos. You will then learn how to manage your growing library of digital nature images using the Elements Organizer.
Assignment: Implementing your image management system, and providing 5 of your favorite nature photographs for critique.
Week 2: Photographic Light And A Tour of Elements
You'll learn how to become more aware of different lighting conditions, and how to take advantage of them. In the Elements portion, you'll learn how to become proficient in getting around the Elements windows, palettes, toolboxes, and layers.
Assignment: Provide an image from using layers in Elements, flattening layers, and saving images in JPEG format.
Week 3: Photographic Composition, Camera Raw, and Making Color and Tonal Corrections To Nature Photos
Nature and landscape composition will be the topic of this weeks lesson. In the Photoshop portion, you'll first learn how to use Camera Raw, then learn how to make color and tonal corrections to your nature images.
Assignment: Making color and tonal adjustments using Levels, Curves, Color Balance, Hue/Saturation, and auto controls in Elements.
Week 4: Making Camera Settings, and Editing Nature Photos in Elements
You'll start off learning the details of camera settings for nature photos. Finally, you'll learn many editing techniques and tools used in Elements.
Assignment: Providing a before and after versions of an image using the techniques learned in Chapters 3 and 4.

- Although the current course materials are currently written for an earlier version of Elements, all techniques apply to the latest versions of Elements (8 and 9). The instructor can answer questions on all versions.
- Familiarity with the basics of Photoshop or Elements.
- Digital or film camera with the ability to make manual adjustments, such as aperture and shutter speeds.
Who is this course intended for?
This class intended for upper beginners through advanced photographers who have a good familiarity with an SLR camera and are comfortable working with image-editing software.
Do I have to have a digital camera?
No, the majority of techniques and suggestions are applicable whether you're using film or digital. However, some of the topics will be specifically targeted for the digital shooter.
How much time will be involved in completing assignments?
You should be able to get through each weeks lessons in a few hours, depending on your familiarity of Photoshop and color/tonal correction and editing techniques.
Do I need to have Elements?
The techniques that I will be demonstrating will be for Elements 7, but most will accommodate Elements 6 too. And I can answer questions on either version. You can also download a 30-day trial of Elements at adobe.com.
What should I expect to learn in this course?
Each lesson starts out teaching techniques regarding shooting nature photos, then dives into Elements. You'll learn the step-by-step process of organizing, correcting, Camera Raw, and making edits to your nature photos. After completing the course, you'll have a more solid understanding of shooting techniques, as well as becoming more proficient in the use of Elements.
