Lesson 1: Shooting in RAW
Introduction: RAW is a hot topic, and most advanced digital cameras now support RAW capture. What is the benefit to shooting in RAW, and why choose RAW over JPEG? What tools are available for working with RAW images?
Assignment: With your camera set to Daylight white balance, shoot two photos - one in JPEG the other in Raw. Using Adobe Camera Raw, or your preferred converter, correct the white balance in the Raw image to remove the color cast caused by shooting with the wrong setting. Upload both images, labeled before and after along with what settings you used in Camera Raw to correct the RAW image.
Lesson 2: Basic RAW Conversions
Learn how to make basic image conversions with RAW files that would be difficult or impossible to do with other formats. Lesson 2 will show you how to correct Exposure, White Balance, Contrast, Brightness.
Assignment: Using the controls covered in this week's lesson, make adjustments to correct your image. Please upload the before and after versions of your images including the adjustments made with each slider.
Lesson 3: Beyond the Basics
Most RAW processors let you take advantage of advanced features including color correction, custom settings. Learn how to create quality black and white images before you convert your files, and how to merge images for maximum highlight and shadow detail.
Assignment: For this week's assignment, I'd like to see three sets of images: one set with dense shadow detail, another shot in low light, and another subject that you think would make a good black-and-white print.
Lesson 4: Optimizing the RAW Workflow
RAW processing adds more work to the digital darkroom. Lesson 4 will show you how to optimize your workflow, perform conversions on batches of images, and converting for multiple uses.
Assignment: For our last assignment, I'd like each of you to provide 2-4 images that require a combination of adjustments covered throughout the class. Examples of what I'd like to see are images that require adjustment to exposure, noise, and color temperature. Please include the before and after versions of your images along with the settings used to make your conversion.
