Few people are able to spend most of their time pursuing their passion in life. I'm one of them, and I feel blessed to have had a love affair with photography since I began taking pictures.

In 1970, I decided to abort my intended career as a doctor in favor of photography and have never regretted it. Photography has enriched my life more than I can tell you. My career has taken me to over 60 countries, and I've seen and photographed wondrous things.

I specialize in wildlife and nature, international travel, and digital effects. In addition, I also shoot nudes, photo- and electron microscopy, children, and other subjects that stimulate my visual or emotional sensibilities.

For 25 years, I shot a medium format camera, specifically the Mamiya RZ 67, for its superior quality. When I would lecture, Iíd project the large, glass mounted transparencies, and it was really an incredible experience to see the brilliant color saturation and resolution of these slides. However, I went digital in 2004 because the technology finally equaled or surpassed medium format. I now shoot the Canon 1Ds Mark II digital camera with a variety of lenses.

I am the author of 12 books on photography. My work is sold in 30 countries around the world, and my images have appeared on scores of magazine and book covers, calendars, posters, national ads, trade ads, brochures, and corporate promotions.

For many years I've led photography tours to exotic places. These include Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Burma, Greece, The Czech Republic and Slovakia, Spain, Morocco, and Peru.

Week 1:  Flash Exposure - How It Works and Why It Fails
When flash exposures fail and why, flash terminology, understanding the cause and prevention of red-eye, the Inverse Square Law, black backgrounds.
Assignment:  Submit flash shots where the sensor has failed and explain why it did so based on the principles I discuss in this lesson. And/or submit flash photos where the exposure is correct and explain why you got the results you did.

Week 2: Working with Off-Camera Flash 
Comparing On-Camera and Off-Camera Flash, , wireless trigger, how to using an off-camera flash.
Assignment: Submit photos showing off-camera flash illumination. Any subject is OK. 
 
Week 3:  Fill Flash, Bounce Flash, Etc.
How to work with fill flash and bounce flash, plus the issue of unwanted shadows and exposure.
Assignment: Submit fill flash photos taken outside with any of the techniques discussed here. Balance the light on the subject with the background

Week 4:  Capturing Motion with Flash-Blur 
How to convey motion in your photo with flash/blur technique, rear curtain sync.
Assignment: Submit photos where you use a flash in combination with a long exposure. Any subject is OK. Be careful not to overexpose your pictures.

Who is this course intended for?
This course is open to photographers of all levels. As long as you are interesed in learning how to use your flash, you are welcome to join this course!  

What kind of equipment will I need to complete the photo assignments?
Ideally, you should have any camera and lens system that allows both wide-angle and telephoto capabilities as well as the ability to control aperture and shutter speed. To take full advantage of the lessons on flash photography, you need a flash that you can fully control. A flash that you can detach from the camera will come in especially handy, but itís not required.  For the lesson on off-camera flash, if you donít have this capability, Jim will give you a different assignment.  

Does the power output of the flash that I currently own matter?
No, it doesnít. 

Will my built-in flash in my point-and-shoot camera be OK for this course?
Yes, it will.  However, you will be limited in what you can do with it.  But Jim can still explain how to soften the light so your subjects wonít look so harsh, And in reading the critiques and seeing other students' photos, you will probably be inspired to get a more sophisticated flash.
