Lesson 1: Exploring the Shooting Modes on Your Camera
When you leave the Green Zone on your camera, where do you go? We will visit Shutter Priority, Running Man, The Great Mountain and Flower Power. In lesson 1 of our quest to leave the Green Zone, we will explore all available shooting mode options except two, Aperture Priority (A or Tv, for Time Value) and Manual Mode (M), we will save those for future lessons.
Assignment: Modes and shutter speeds.
Lesson 2: Aperture Priority and ISO Settings
In the last lesson, we learned about shutter speeds and experimented with their affect on our images. Then we let the camera drive using the various preset modes. Now you are going to learn to drive the camera. True sports car enthusiasts would not dream of buying a Corvette with an automatic transmission, they want to shift the gears! You will soon be in complete control of your camera as well, shifting gears like a pro!
Assignment: Working in Aperture Priority and trying different ISOs.
Lesson 3: Understanding Depth of Field
Depth of Field. You no doubt have heard this term thrown around before but what does it really mean? Does it have something to do with football? No, this is a very exciting tool used to give you even more control of you artistic vision. We will take this a step at a time and learn the real meaning of Depth of Field. You now understand setting ISO values, selecting shutter speeds and selecting apertures. Now we are going to learn about Depth of Field.
Assignment: Shoot scenes with depth (close foreground and distant background).
Lesson 4: Manual Mode and the Proper Exposure
Manual exposure, the dreaded “M” word, everything you have learned to this point has prepared you to take off the training wheels and roll. Now that you are the proud owner of a six-speed Ferrari (I mean powerful photographic tool!), we will learn how to use all of this control to create photographic art. We will now take full control of the exposure and the creative process. Don’t misplace your trusty friend the tripod ... from now on you will appreciate the efforts of this faithful companion.
Assignment: Work Manual mode with different ISO, shutter speed, and aperture settings.
