Photography Instructor: Jim Zuckerman Jim Zuckerman
Few people are able to spend most of their time pursuing their passion in life. I'm one of them, and I feel blessed to have had a love affair with photography since I began taking pictures.

In 1970, I decided to abort my intended career as a doctor in favor of photography and have never regretted it. Photography has enriched my life more than I can tell you. My career has taken me to over 60 countries, and I've seen and photographed wondrous things.

I specialize in wildlife and nature, international travel, and digital effects. In addition, I also shoot nudes, photo- and electron microscopy, children, and other subjects that stimulate my visual or emotional sensibilities.

For 25 years, I shot a medium format camera, specifically the Mamiya RZ 67, for its superior quality. When I would lecture, Id project the large, glass mounted transparencies, and it was really an incredible experience to see the brilliant color saturation and resolution of these slides. However, I went digital in 2004 because the technology finally equaled or surpassed medium format. I now shoot the Canon 1Ds Mark II digital camera with a variety of lenses.

I am the author of 12 books on photography. My work is sold in 30 countries around the world, and my images have appeared on scores of magazine and book covers, calendars, posters, national ads, trade ads, brochures, and corporate promotions.

For many years I've led photography tours to exotic places. These include Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Burma, Greece, The Czech Republic and Slovakia, Spain, Morocco, and Peru.

Course Outline

Lesson 1: Presenting Your Work to the Marketplace
Assignment: Select four photos based on a theme that would comprise a portion of your portfolio. Tell me what the subject of your portfolio is. For your fifth uploaded photo, design a portfolio page either in Photoshop or by hand. The page can have a single image on it or more than one.

Lesson 2: Foolproof Way of Getting Published in Magazines
Assignment: Upload five pictures that represent a single theme that a magazine might be interested in publishing. Don't show me five shots of your cat or of your kids. They have to be photos that illustrate a marketable theme to any kind of special interest or general interest magazine.

Lesson 3: Getting Accepted Into A Stock Agency
Assignment: Upload photos that you would submit to a stock agency. Keep in mind space for copy, color impact, mood, creative shooting angles, unusual subjects, and conceptual imagery.

Lesson 4: Making Money in Art Fairs
Assignment: Submit pictures that you think would sell well in art fairs. Consider coloration , graphic design, the subject matter, and broad appeal.

Lesson 5: Self-Publishing
Assignment: Design some sample products. It can be a note card, calendar page, book cover, poster, photo clock, or something else. Use the type tool in Photoshop to place type into the layout. I will comment on both the photography as well as the sample design.

Lesson 6: Self-Critiques
Assignment: Each photo you upload for this assignment should have your own brief critique written under it. If you think an image is good, say so. If you think it's great, don't be shy. If, in retrospect, the picture is boring, that's OK too. The purpose of this exercise is to have you honestly assess your own work so you can be more successful when you submit work to photo buyers.

Lesson 7: Making Money in Art Galleries
Assignment: Upload images representing a fine art collection around a single theme. I will give you feedback based on the images themselves as well as whether or not I think a gallery would be interested.

Lesson 8: Making Money in the Calendar Market
Assignment: Upload photos that you think would appeal to the calendar market. They don't have to represent a theme, although they can. I will critique any photo on any subject. Just make sure they are horizontal and they can be cropped to a square should a company want to do that.

  • An insatiable desire to make money as a photographer
  • Any type of equipment, although point-and-shoot cameras will limit your ability to take total control over your image.

Is this course intended only for beginning, intermediate, or advanced photographers?
This course is designed for photographers who are intermediate or advanced. Beginning photographers can also take the course and benefit from the marketing ideas, but they will first have to hone their photography skills before they try to sell their work.

What kind of equipment will I need to complete the photo assignments?
Students can use any type of equipment for this course. Obviously, point and shoot cameras limit one's ability to be in total control over one's image making, but even those can satisfy the assignments.
