Final Exam conducted by a professional photographer/instructor

Certified Better Photographer Examination
After all CBP course requirements are completed, individuals may upload images for review and complete a comprehensive exam. The exam is designed to assess the individual's overall knowledge of the photography core concepts.

The BetterPhoto Certification Program uses professional photographers for preparing and scoring in the examination process.

Completion of Certified Better Photographer (CBP) Program
  • A film or digital camera; an SLR type with interchangeable lenses is suggested
  • Access to a computer (and scanner if you are using a film camera) as you will upload images to your online classroom
  • A printer is not necessary but you may want to print lessons if you plan to travel and want to take your lesson on the road
  • A working knowledge of basic camera controls and the ability to control exposure using the lens aperture and shutter speed
  • A lens, or lenses that cover an angle of view from wide-angle to a medium telephoto
  • A lens with a close (macro) focusing ability is suggested
  • A camera with a Depth of Field preview function is recommended
  • A tripod is recommended, strongly
  • External flash unit plus dedicated flash cord
  • Any image editing software that can open and process image files produced by your digital camera, or film scanner
  • For Camera Raw: From Capture to Finished Photo course:The latest version of Photoshop or at a minimum Photoshop CS2, and Adobe Camera Raw
  • For Introduction to Canon Flash course: Canon E-TTL II enabled camera and flash,Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop CS3 and CS4 and Adobe,Photoshop Elements is strongly recommended
  • For High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photography course: Photomatix software
  • For Photoshop: Creative Techniques course: Photoshop CS2 and above
  • For Creative Light and Composition course: Polarizing filter suggested

Testing Requirements

Advanced Certification Portfolio Fulfillment

Final Exam Image Submission

Student's portfolio will consist of a compendium of 20 images as outlined in the following categories, demonstrating the student’s comprehension and application of elements included in the Masters Courses curriculum.

For each image, include the following:

  • Title noting which technique/concept the picture depicts.
  • Description including the technical data (f/stop, shutter speed, ISO), plus any other facts/comments that you would like to share about the photo.
Note: Photos submitted for this exam can be previously shot ones (i.e., from your gallery, from classes, etc.), or new images at your discretion.
  1. Composition: (2 photos) Submit two photos exhibiting the use of lines as a major graphic-design element, demonstrating proficient compositional technique.
  2. Depth of Field: (2 photos) Include one image demonstrating shallow depth of field (selective focus) and a second image demonstrating overall depth of field (sharp foreground and background).
  3. Exposure: (2 photos) Submit two photos demonstrating the need for exposure compensation - one image with either very dark or very light tones that would have influenced the camera’s meter, and a second photo in which there’s the creative use of light and shadow (i.e., such as a scene in which either a shadow or a silhouette is the picture’s main subject).
  4. Design Elements: (3 photos) Submit three photos composed with strong graphic design elements, such as pattern, shape, symmetry, and/or texture.
  5. Lighting: (3 photos) Demonstrate the effective use of soft lighting, such as images taken in shade, on an overcast day, or at dawn or dusk.
  6. Storytelling: (4 photos) Present four images in a series, comprising a central subject or scene with different compositions, angles, and/or lighting to convey a story theme.
  7. Elective: (4 photos) Include four additional images you feel represent techniques you have learned in the Intermediate curriculum of courses.
