Leland N. Saunders
bio

What kind of photography do you most enjoy?
I am a landscape photographer who shoots cityscapes and architecture also. For a while last winter, I took many photos of barns and their surroundings. Most recently, I have enjoyed more cityscapes. My wife and I love to travel, so my photos include scenes from Israel, Cambodia, Ecuador, Europe, and all over the U.S.

How long have you been a photographer?
My first experience with photography was in Vietnam in 1969. I was a "Combat Correspondent" in the U.S. Army and I had a photographer assigned to work with me. We became good friends and he guided me as I played around with photography. Once I was part of the welcoming committee as Bob Hope arrived for a USO show. Even though it is not very good, the photo from that experience is one of my prized possessions.

After leaving the Army in 1970, photography was not an avocation that I pursued … until about 5 years ago when I discovered digital photography. I was hooked again!! Two years ago, I became acquainted with and joined BetterPhoto. Being a part of the BetterPhoto community has been the turning point that has propelled me forward as a photographer.

What inspires you?
I am continually inspired by God's creation around me … the rising and setting sun, clouds in the sky over a city's skyline, the purple sky at twilight, a blanket of fresh snow, and on and on. I love to be up at dawn with my camera. This is good because I am a morning person and I've found that many of my most successful images have been made at dawn.

I'm also inspired when someone likes one of my photos. I am just thrilled when I make a good image that others can also appreciate. When it comes to leisure activities, there are two kinds of people: those who do things like biking or running, and those who make things like photographs.

What are your photography goals?
My photography goal is to become the best photographer I can. I realize there is no end point to this goal. There is always the next hurdle to cross … there is always another level to be attained. The goal is met as long as there is progress.

How has BetterPhoto helped you attain them?
Besides my own motivation, BetterPhoto has been and continues to be the most decisive and essential ingredient in my photographic progress. Before I became a member of BetterPhoto, I had the desire to become a photographer, but I had no structure and no guidance to rely on. BetterPhoto provides that structure and guidance through the courses I have taken, the monthly contest where I participate regularly, the two Summits I have attended (and plan to attend my third in NYC), and most recently, the Masterpiece Membership which is a major contributor. The progress I have made and the things I have learned through my association with BetterPhoto have been practical, hands-on and invaluable.

We celebrate Leland's Third Place award for his image "Moonlight over Grand Rapids" for the July Mission "Fireworks or Slow Shutter Twilight". Moonlight over Grand Rapids received 29 nominations - congratulations Leland!

Leland's Wish List

What is on my Photography Wish List?
My wish list could go on for pages and pages: new camera, new computer, upgrade software from Elements to CS4, more lenses. Another thing is to accompany Jim Zuckerman on a photo tour to Europe. And last, but not least, a winning photo in the BetterPhoto Monthly Contest!!

What do you carry in your camera bag?
Of course, I carry all the stuff that one may need when out shooting. I try to be as prepared as possible, carrying duplicates of many things. But the most important item is my checklist. It has been a great idea and has saved me from some really dumb errors.
