What kind of photography do you most enjoy?
I have not settled on one or two main areas of photography and enjoy many areas. I would say I photograph landscapes, architecture and nature the most. I'm in love with the "Golden Hour", including the time both before sunrise and after sunset.
How long have you been a photographer?
I have been a photographer on and off for the past 20-25 years. Back then, I used to have a darkroom and worked for hours to produce 1 image. Since I was a chemistry major in college, I enjoyed mixing chemicals, and darkroom work was a natural progression.
What got you started?
My wife Shara and I enjoy traveling in our motor home and ever since our honeymoon 32 years ago - when we went to California for 6 weeks in a motor home - I wanted to capture the moments we enjoyed. After putting down the camera for about 10 years, Canon inspired me with its 40D and the switch to digital was made about a year and half ago. I am at the stage of life when after owning our business for 36 years, I'm looking for a new direction.
What inspires you?
I would have to say that for most of my adult life, inspiration came from being able to make payroll every Friday for my employees. Since getting back into photography, it has made me look around at all the beauty that surrounds us everyday. Now after many years of walking through an area just to get to the other side, I frequently stop to "Smell the Roses".
What are your photography goals?
My photographic goals are constantly evolving, but in general, I would say that my goal is to be able to see the perfect image and capture it, no matter the subject. Getting my work published and being recognized is my ultimate goal, and BP is a big part of that.
How has BetterPhoto helped you attain them?
Attending the BP summit in St. Augustine was more important to my growth as a photographer than I ever thought it would have been. Jim Miotke's talk on storytelling, Lewis Kemper's Photoshop tips, Kerry Drager's perspective on wide-angle and Ibarionex Perello's highly inspirational talk on seeing the light inspired me beyond my wildest dreams. However, it's BP's members who are its greatest asset. I love chatting, critiquing and admiring other members' work.
