Graham D. Sher has been a member of BetterPhoto since December 2005.
I'm a very busy professional guy, with a growing family who is passionate about my photography but suffer for the lack of time to invest in it. I live in Ottawa, the (beautiful but cold in winter!!) capital of Canada. Over the past 2 years since moving to digital (now on Nikon D200 with multiple lenses), I have improved immeasurably, and even sold a number of shots (on Shutterpoint.com). I hope to make the best of my time to learn more from BetterPhoto.com and to continuously learn and improve my skills. Thanks for a great website.
What kind of photography do you most enjoy?
Mostly, I enjoy architecture photography. I am drawn to lines, curves, shadows and structures. I don't have any particular favorite form of architecture, but anything structural catches my eye. My wife (my best supporter and best critic) often complains that there are no people in my photographs - I go to lengths to eliminate people!!
How long have you been a photographer?
On and off for about 15 years, but a very serious amateur for the past 6 or so years. The digital revolution really drove my pursuit to a higher level, even though I dabbled in film photography and Black & White processing before that.
What got you started?
I've always loved to travel and to retain and capture images of my various places of exploration.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by the work of so many other photographers, both the masters and the many amateurs who produce great work. That's why a site such as BetterPhoto is so great - it is always inspiring to see the spectacular images so many people create, and the more I see of others' work, the more I am inspired. I devour photography books and magazines - my shelves are groaning under their weight!!
What are your photography goals?
Since my job consumes so much time and so much of my energy, my goals currently as a photographer are simply to find the time to take more photos, to explore and to expand my horizons. In the long run, I absolutely see myself making this my second career - as soon as I can say to my family "I'm ready for early retirement"! I know I will not be bored in my retirement years - the problem is the current economic conditions may just push that off for a while!!
How has BetterPhoto helped you attain them?
By looking at, learning from, and following the successes of so many others. There are a great many excellent photographers on BP, so keep 'em coming!
